Music with a Mission.

Music plays an important role in my life. As a child, playing my parents’ records, always listening to the radio, and taking my first piano lessons. It’s wonderful to listen to as many styles and artists as possible, discover your musical preferences, and thereby develop your identity.
This is probably a very recognizable story. Because who doesn’t remember all those sounds, melodies, and atmospheres you absorbed in your youth? It shows how deeply music is rooted in our brains and our entire being.
Later, I swapped the piano for a guitar and continued singing. Soon, I started playing and singing with others and experienced how music could create connection.

In the past, I also played the organ a lot in addition to the piano, but ultimately, the guitar won out as my instrument.

I am someone who loves to make people happy, and music was perfect for that.
Perhaps due to advancing years, but certainly due to a profound personal event a few years ago, I started looking for more meaning and purpose. Precisely at that moment, my music friend Rob van Riel introduced me to ‘Singing in Care’ (Zingen in de Zorg) and the training to become a Care Singer (Zorg-Zanger). That was exactly what I was looking for!
Giving moments of happiness to people who desperately need them, by doing what I love so much: making music.

In bands, at festivals, parties, pubs – my music friends and I have had and brought so much joy.

During the training, I learned a lot about dementia and how singing can be a powerful tool to reach people and help them experience beautiful moments. Through the BASE methodology, we can activate sound and muscle memory via ever-present musical memories. Singing together creates positivity, allowing us to focus on what is still possible. This leads to a better quality of life for people with dementia, regardless of their stage.
Meanwhile, I’ve had the privilege of leading wonderful sessions full of emotions, joy, relaxation, comfort, and connection. I usually use my guitar for these sessions. The calm and harmonious sounds contribute to relaxation and the musical experience.

Singing in Care is the most beautiful thing imaginable to be able to do as a musician and as a person.

Peter Vogelaar en Rob van Riel

Together with Rob van Riel, also a member of the Care Singers Guild, I form the duo The Memories.

The sessions we conduct are ideal for larger groups. We offer sing-along sessions and workshops in various care institutions.

Together with Maartje de Lint, artistic director of Singing in Care, I am also active with ‘Singing for your Brain’ (Zingen voor je Brein), a specialized training for anyone aged 18+ with a brain challenge.

During the training, participants receive step-by-step information about how the brain works, and there is a lot of singing together.
